Annotated Bibliography - Reflective Blog #2

Larson, L. (2009). E-reading and e-responding: New tools for the next generation of readers. Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, 53(3), 255-258.

In the journal article, e-Reading and e-Responding: New Tools for the Next Generation of Readers, Larson, an instructor at Kansas State University, explores e-book technology and how it can be used for developing literacy skills. Various forms of e-books have long since been available for use to enrich reading. These technologies have evolved and become more advanced over the years. E-books today are more interactive, offering readers a chance to get more involved with the text. Examples of e-books are listed in a table within the article to give readers a chance to explore the various types available. In the article, young individuals developing their reading skills are observed giving the newer technology a trial run; afterwards, the readers evaluate their experiences. While some were resistant to the change in instruction method in the beginning, all readers ended up enjoying what the new technology had to offer. Larson’s research on the topic appears to be non-bias.

This article showcases the evolution of instruction methods, and the role it plays in this ever advancing world. The use of e-books is a great way to integrate technology in assisting readers with developing their reading skills. I can’t help but wonder what advances the world of technology will offer to future readers.

Blog #1- Analyzing educational blogs

Successful Teaching by Pat Hensley -
http://successfulteaching.blogspot.com/
This blog gives educators tips and strategies for successful teaching.
The design is simple, a brown background with a picture on the top featuring educational materials (colored pencils, notebooks...). She has tags to her different posts listed on the side, so if you are looking for a specific topic you can jump to it quickly. One thing I did not like about the blog is the text takes a while to load. When you first arrive at the page text is blue in color and difficult to read until the rest of the page loads. I passed over this blog multiple times since it was difficult to read. When I finally let some time pass I saw the page fully load and it was easy to read. I think the tips and strategies are very helpful for any educator at any age level.

Tammy's Technology Tips for Teachers by Tammy Worcester - http://www.tammyworcester.com/Tips/Tammys_Technology_Tips_for_Teachers.html
This blog gives educators tips related to technology. It provides helpful resources and brief descriptions on how to utilize those resources. The background is plain light gray with a cute picture at the top featuring an old fashioned school house and a animated computer guy. The page is clutter free with no extra gadgets on the page. Her tabs at the top very nicely organize different tips, ideas/activities, and resources. I like this blog because it gives me ideas and resources to use as a pre-service teacher. I would recommend this blog to any educator.

The Greatest Middle School Social Studies Blog in the World - http://moranmustangs.org/
This blog is set-up to keep a middle school social studies connected outside of the classroom. It is used for homework by requiring students to post blogs related to specific topics assigned by the teacher. It also helpful in keeping parents involved in their students progress and learning within the classroom. The blog is simple not fancy pictures but it does have an rather cool gadget (that I have on my Life with Lisa blog) called the Live Traffic Feed gadget. It monitors the traffic of who is visiting your blog. I like it because it is neat to see from where people are viewing your blog. I've never imagined my blog was being viewed by anyone in the past until I added that gadget now I'm blown away to see the traffic on my blog website as I'm sure the students who are apart of this blog are as well. I like how each students individual blog is linked on the side column of the page. I would not necessarily recommend this blog to others only because it seems the purpose of it is specifically for the students withing that classroom and their parents but it was interesting to see how a teacher can implement something like a blog into their teaching curriculum.

Free Technology for Teachers by Richard Byrne
http://www.freetech4teachers.com/
This blog is a wonderful technology blog for educators. It offers multiple resources for educators to use to assist in their classrooms. The tabs at the tops are offer easy access to the different technology resources including downloads, books, blogs, and video resources. I really like this blog because as a teacher who is constantly looking for new affordable ideas to use in the classroom the word free naturally makes me gravitate towards it to find out more. I like how each post offers suggestion links to other related blog posting to help you search even further. The blog itself may lack color but all the colorful widgets and links offered on the blog keep my attention. I would absolutely recommend this blog to other educators for it's plethora of resources that are free no less!

So You Want to Teach -
http://www.soyouwanttoteach.com/20-classic-sywtt-articles-and-series/
This blog is a compilation of articles of widely ranged teaching issues including classroom management, and encouragement just to name a couple. This background is black with a white text box filled with mostly black text. The tabs at the top outline the organization of the blog. According to the blog post under the start tab, there are over 400 articles so there is always something new to read. That was one of the reasons I enjoyed this blog. I would read an article and a colorful link on the side column would have a suggestion for another witty article. I couldn't help myself, I got caught up in clicking from link to link reading multiple interesting articles. I would recommend this blog to other educators because it offers humor and encouragement for teachers who need it.
